4 out of 5 stars a nice alternate   October 4, 2008
B. Jacobsen (Los Angeles)
I love the version on Love and Theft and this is a nice alternate version. It's not as driving as the Love and Theft version. It takes it's time. The music has an etherial Time out of Mind feel while the voice sounds like Love and Theft. br / br /Best thing you can do to get a sense of it is listen to the demo clip.

4 out of 5 stars Like it better than the "official" version   September 30, 2008

This is a very nice Dylan song. I like this version much better than the Love and Theft version. This stripped-down, bare-bones arrangement adds to the poignancy of the lyrics and vocal delivery. It's very much Dylan. I have no idea why any Dylan fan would bash it -- OK so it's not one of his all-time, highest-high classics, but it is very enjoyable and has all the Dylan trademarks that I enjoy so much. It's been in my head since I downloaded it a few days ago, and I'm coming back now after living with it to give my $0.02. I like the guitar riffing (who plays on this?) I'm very happy this version was released, and even happier that it's a free download! Everybody wins.

I judge music mostly on a simple like-it-or-don't-like-it basis. 'Mississippi' I like. First time I heard it was Cheryl Crow's recording, and it jumped out at me just as a song. br / br /I enjoy both Cheryl Crow's version and Dylan's. The song is stereotypic Dylan. For me that's good. br / br /Its certainly not the best Dylan, but if you listen only to the best you'll greatly narrow your fare, and limit your comprehension. br / br /Its good music with interesting verse.

Fits right in with the Time Out Of Mind album. We'll never know why things get left off, I guess.

4 out of 5 stars Good to hear the original take on this song   September 25, 2008

Sheryl Crow covered this song on "The Globe Sessions" nearly a decade ago, and it was a blend of Bob Dylan-ized vocals with Prince's "Raspberry Beret" thrown in. Dylan's original recording strips the song down to its soul, and this is probably the first time I can actually comprehend what he's singing about. Normally, he sounds like he has marbles in his mouth. This song, it's a long, toe-thumping melody that is easy on the ears. Crow's version is more upbeat and could easily be mistaken for a Prince or John Mellencamp single.
